How To Tie A Double Four-In-Hand Knot

Today our founder Jonathan Cavaliere walks us through how to tie his favourite tie knot the double four-in-hand knot.

This sophisticated knot not only adds a touch of elegance to your attire but also incorporates a unique detail that sets it apart. Join me as I guide you through the steps to perfecting this versatile and stylish tie knot.

Setting the Stage: Choosing the Right Tie

For this demonstration, I've selected a Beige Wool Knit Tie. Keep in mind that even if your tie has a bit of weight to it, the Double Four-in-Hand knot will work wonders, making it an excellent choice for various occasions.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting the Double Four-in-Hand Knot

  1. Preparation is Key: Begin by flipping your collar and buttoning up your shirt, including the top button. This ensures a neat appearance and a well-structured collar.

  2. Balancing Lengths: To start, make the thicker end of the tie slightly longer than the thinner end. This extra length will be essential for crafting the knot.

  3. Creating the Base: Position the tie so the thicker end hangs on your dominant side. Cross the thicker end over the thinner end, forming an "X."

  4. Initial Loop: Bring the thicker end under the thinner end and then over it, creating a loop around your neck.

  5. Doubling Up: This is where the magic of the Double Four-in-Hand begins. Instead of proceeding with a regular Four-in-Hand knot, wrap the thicker end around the loop you just created one more time. This double loop sets the foundation for the distinctive detail.

  6. The Second Loop: After creating the double loop, continue the process by bringing the thicker end of the tie under the loop and then threading it through the space between the loop and your necktie.

  7. Finishing Touches: Pull the thicker end of the tie gently to tighten the knot. Then, tuck it into the second loop you created. This slight tuck is what gives the Double Four-in-Hand its unique appearance.

  8. Perfecting the Look: To achieve a polished finish, adjust the knot by gently pulling the thinner end of the tie. This will create the desired dimple, adding an extra touch of sophistication to your knot.

Refining Your Style: Tailoring the Knot to Your Preference

One of the fantastic aspects of the Double Four-in-Hand is its versatility. Depending on your desired look, you can choose to let the back blade of the tie hang casually or tuck it in for a cleaner appearance. This adaptability makes the knot suitable for both formal and slightly relaxed settings.

Final Thoughts: Elevate Your Attire with Confidence

Mastering the art of the Double Four-in-Hand knot opens up a world of possibilities for enhancing your style. Its subtle intricacy sets it apart from standard knots, making it a go-to choice for those seeking to make a refined statement.
