Today, I teach you how to perfectly match a pocket square to your suit and what other elements can affect this decision. Pocket squares are a great way to add some flair to your outfit, and getting the pairing right can elevate your whole look.
Key Points to Consider:
-
Color Coordination:
- When selecting a pocket square, start by looking at the colors in the square itself. Ideally, you want some of these colors to be present in your suit, shirt, or tie. For example, if you have a paisley pocket square with a white base and a blue edge, and your outfit includes a green suit, white shirt, and a tie with various colors, you might want to highlight the navy from the tie with the blue edge of the pocket square.
-
Folding Technique:
- How you fold your pocket square can impact which colors or patterns are most visible. A common fold I use involves grabbing the square from the center, giving it a twist, and then placing it in the pocket with the blades out. This way, both the base fabric and edge fabric of the square are visible, giving a balanced look.
-
Matching vs. Contrasting:
- You don’t always have to match your pocket square perfectly with your outfit. Sometimes, going bold with a contrasting pocket square can make your outfit stand out. For instance, today I’m using a bold pocket square with beige and terracotta colors, which adds a striking contrast to my outfit.
-
Avoiding the “Prom Look”:
- One crucial tip is to avoid matching your pocket square exactly with your tie. Sets that come with a matching tie and pocket square in the same fabric should be avoided. It looks too coordinated and can give off a “prom” vibe. Instead, go for a pocket square that complements your tie but is different in pattern or texture. For example, if your tie has stripes, choose a paisley or polka dot pocket square instead.
