What I'm Wearing Today: Navy Cavalry Twill Double Breasted Suit + Brown Spectator Shoes

Today, I’m excited to walk you through my outfit and share some insights into the details, fabrics, and choices behind it. Let’s dive in, starting with the centerpiece: the suit.

The Navy Double-Breasted Cavalry Twill Suit

This suit is crafted from a robust and heavy fabric known as cavalry twill. For those unfamiliar, twill fabrics feature diagonal lines in their weave—think of denim as an example. Cavalry twill, however, takes it up a notch in terms of structure and durability. Originally designed for equestrian trousers or horse-riding breeches, this fabric has a fascinating history of practicality and resilience.

A closer look at the suit reveals its diagonal pattern and impressive ability to hold its shape. What’s great about this cloth is that it’s resistant to creasing and only improves with age, making it a timeless investment. This suit is built to last—not just for my lifetime but potentially for the next generation as well.

Here are some key details of the suit:

  • Button Configuration: A classic six-button double-breasted design, with two functional buttons.

  • Trousers: Featuring a 2-inch cuff at the hem, side adjusters for a perfect fit, and a higher waist for a touch of elegance.

  • Lapels: Big peak lapels that add presence and flair, especially fitting for a double-breasted silhouette.

The Tie: A Threefold Wonder

Next up is the tie. This is a threefold silk tie, handcrafted with minimal canvas inside. Why does that matter? The absence of a canvas layer makes it more comfortable and allows for a beautifully formed knot that’s not overly constrictive around the neck.

While other brands might opt for fivefold, sixfold, or even sevenfold ties, I’m a fan of the simplicity and elegance of a threefold design. The thin silk construction provides a lightweight feel, perfect for achieving a clean and polished look.

The Shirt: Bengal Stripe Perfection

This shirt is a Bengal stripe design, alternating blue and white stripes. The bold yet classic pattern adds a vibrant touch to the outfit, making it a standout piece while staying true to timeless menswear traditions. It’s one of those shirts that feels like a “banger” whenever you wear it—a dependable favorite.

The Shoes: Leather and Suede Spectators

On my feet, I’m wearing a pair of spectator shoes by Harris, a brand from Florence. These feature a mix of leather and suede, embodying the spectator style, which combines two different materials or colors. These are wingtip shoes with a twist—a lug sole. The rubberized sole is a practical addition, especially for Canadian winters, offering grip and durability without compromising on style.

The Accessories

  1. The Watch: On my wrist, I’m wearing my grandfather’s watch. This heirloom piece carries sentimental value and has aged beautifully over the years. Originally all gold, the patina has worn off in places, leaving traces of gold in select areas—a detail that adds character and charm.

  2. The Pocket Square: The finishing touch is a silk pocket square with a circular pattern. The brown and blue edges subtly tie together the tones of the outfit while adding a refined pop of color to my pocket.
