Over the past year, I have taken a real interest in learning about what makes good coffee.
Even though I had always been a caffeine lover, I used to ignorantly think that all coffee was the same and what you added to it was what made the difference. Boy, was I wrong.
I made a point of visiting a bunch of highly praised coffee shops in the city with my partner in crime, Hillory Renkema, over the summer. I got to truly experience incredible tastes and learn how the techniques prior to grounding made all the difference in flavour. With this knowledge, I was intrigued to learn more and decided to go and visit a couple of local roasters to see how they process their beans to create that perfect cup. The whole experience was eye-opening to say the least, as the work that goes into making a consistent-tasting product was truly remarkable.
This type of experience is something that the people at McCafé wanted to bring to their customers. Not only do they offer a variety of gourmet options in store, but you can now bring that same delicious taste home. McCafé uses only premium, 100% Arabica beans, which are grown at high altitudes to allow for more time for the flavour to develop and for a higher quality aroma. Furthermore the coffee is taste tested up to 74 times to ensure a consistent flavour and the pods are 100% compostable, so you can be assured that your daily cup of caffeine won’t have a negative impact on the environment.
On a personal level, this came at the perfect time for me. Not only do I frequently make my morning brew at home before responding to e-mails and heading out the door – but at the beginning of this month, I fractured my fibula while playing soccer. Not only did this make life a bit more difficult, but it also stopped me from enjoying visiting various coffee shops with my girlfriend. Thankfully, over the past couple of weeks Hillory has taken the time off of work to take care of me and we have found a new way to enjoy coffee here at home.
