What It’s Like to Drive a Ferrari for the First Time

I think it’s safe to say that all young boys, at one point or another, have a fascination with supercars.

For some of us, it was all about the chance to experience face melting acceleration as we stirred this eccentric piece of metal with the engine roared behind us. For others, it’s more of a statement item, an admirable piece of aerodynamic art that would not only turn the heads of our peers but beautiful women. So, when the good people at Xtreme Xperience asked me to come live out this boyhood fantasy, I had to restrain myself from emailing back a resounding “HELL YEA!”.

Since 2012, Xtreme Xperience has been touring around the United States allowing people to drive the exotic car of their wildest dreams. Xtreme Xperience was looking to bring this adrenaline pumping fun to the Canadian market and asked myself and my team to come along to find out what thousands of people have been raving about.

When the day finally came, I jumped in my 2004 Toyota Corolla, rolled down my arm strong windows, picked up the team and we hauled our way up to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Burketon, Ontario. As we drove, I couldn’t help but think about which vehicle I would be paired with. Would it be a sleek Porsche 911 or could it be the Lamborghini Huracan? Once we arrived we were warmly greeted by the Xtreme team and given our tags to identify which cars we would be driving. Almost in slow motion, I flipped my card to reveal the iconic Italian stallion, the Ferrari 488 GTB (the fastest vehicle in their fleet). As we sat through the safety class, the sweat slowly started rolling down my forehead and butterflies filled my gut. I was about to experience something that only a privileged few get to do in their lifetime.

Nervously fiddling with our balaclava, we walked toward the track to see these bold coloured mechanical beasts pulling up, ready to take us on a ride of a lifetime. After getting acquainted with our pro-driving instructors it was time to hop behind the wheel. As I sat there all I could see was aesthetically pleasing carbon fiber notches and switches with the iconic yellow emblem in the middle of the steering wheel. As I slowly tapped the gas I heard the rumble of the engine, as if it were a lion just purring to be released. Almost out of nowhere, the driving instructor in the passenger seat moved his arm forward and said, “Alright, let’s do this.”

I gingerly put my foot on the gas and started stirring through the turns, I slowly felt this euphoria that I had only seen in movies. Gliding through each curve on the track, I noticed my comfort level grow and my speed gradually increase. It wasn’t until we hit the track straight away that I truly felt what this Italian speed machine could really do. Just as we came around the final bend into the pit, I had an uncontrollable urge to keep on going as if I was in a trance. Before I knew it, I was peeling open the door and our videographer Justin was yelling “How was it brother?!”

Driving a Ferrari is simply like nothing else. It makes you feel invincible and for me, it was as good as I had imagined. The issue was, like with all good things, that I was now hooked like an addict to the thrill of the drive. I wanted more and I guess that’s the allure of these exotic powerhouses. Below is our visual interpretation of what driving a Ferrari felt like, which unfortunately won’t quite do it justice until you try it for yourself!
