Top Picks: London Fashion Week S/S 2014

As you may or may not know it’s that time of year again! The time of year when fashion buyers, directors, magazine editors, bloggers and enthusiasts worldwide travel across Europe and North America for the biggest runway shows and collection showings by the most influential designers of today. This crucial time in the world of fashion is called Fashion Week. For the next month the most elite of the style-set will be travelling to the top style destinations for each city’s edition of Fashion Week, looking for the latest trends, prints, styles, silhouettes, and inspiration for Spring/Summer 2014. The first stop on this journey is always London Fashion Week!

I know what you guys are thinking right now: most of what comes down the runway is un-wearable and way to wacky and out there for me to “actually” wear. To be completely honest, I couldn’t agree more. But Fashion Week is important to pay attention to because it gives you the overall “feeling” of what clothing and trends will look like for the coming seasons. Here I share with you my 3 top picks from my favourite menswear collections of London Fashion Week 2014:

Alexander McQueen

This is probably the boldest collection I would choose to show but I feel it’s always important to pay attention to the Alexander McQueen show as it’s always a trendsetter. As you look at the images above you should get a feeling that fashion is moving in a cleaner and more luxurious direction.  With lace prints and satin finishes, this collection has shown us that fashion is moving in a more elaborate but sartorially driven direction.

How can I incorporate this into my personal style for S/S 2014:

  • Look for floral and paisley prints in light colours
  • Double breasted suiting is finally here
  • Choose a slim silhouette
  • Opt for cropped pants
  • Ticket pockets are still trending
  • Find a great printed trouser
  • Think about contrast collars

Oliver Spencer

I am a huge fan of Oliver Spencer because he makes clothes for the fashion forward gent while keeping in mind that he is designing for a real person. Almost every piece you find in Oliver’s collections can be worn in an everyday setting but still has the edge that will make it stand out in a crowd. I am personally a huge fan of all the soft tailoring that has been a big trend over the past couple seasons! For more on soft or unconstructed tailoring click here.

How can I incorporate this into my personal style for S/S 2014:

  • Scout out pieces with soft or unconstructed tailoring
  • Find some great cotton suiting that’s perfect for Summer weather
  • Adding colour and print completes a summer look
  • Try rolling your pant cuffs
  • Go for a club collar
  • Get your hands on a great three piece suit
  • Break out the tasseled loafers

Burberry Prorsum

Always one of my favourite shows from London Fashion Week, Burberry as always puts together a “complete” collection for S/S 2014. What I mean by complete is that no matter the occasion, event, or place, Burberry Prorsum always offers a look that will suite perfectly.  Burberry Prorsum also strays away from the other designers, since this collection went for solid colour blocking while still offering trademarks British Heritage pieces.

How can I incorporate this into my personal style for S/S 2014:

  • Try colour blocking
  • Choose some light layering for your look
  • Get a pair of trusty boat shoes
  • Light weight scarves are the perfect Spring accessory
  • Try a pair of contrast coloured sunglasses
  • Look for scoop necks
