Having a uniform or a signature look can be a great way of building a solid menswear collection. After you have nailed the essentials and really understand the fundamentals of men’s style, I encourage you to experiment with your look. This could be as simple as buying some printed socks or as extreme as investing in paisley trousers. Just remember that personal style, like life, is a journey and it’s always changing and adapting.
One style experiment that I have been testing out is finding items to replace an overcoat or parka. I find that when you don’t allow yourself to resort to a big warm layer, it makes your sartorial choices that much more interesting.
I discovered that one of the best ways to maintain a tailored look while staying warm is to throw on a down vest over my suits and sport coats. Whether it’s blue tweed (as seen here) or the camouflage nylon version I am wearing above, I find this combination blends a perfect balance between fashion and functionality.
To complete the look, I paired my down vest with my Donegal tweed blazer, a white club collared shirt, a green printed skinny tie, a 1 inch tie bar, black chinos, grey wool socks, black leather gloves, tasselled loafers, and a black square faced watch.
What pieces have you bought recently that have pushed your style to the next level?
